“I arrived at a comedy show at Rififi, the coolest alt-comedy room in the city at the time. I had worked hard to get booked on this show, and was excited to be there. I said hi to the booker, eager to find out when I’d be going up. As friendly as can be, he said, “Hey, do you mind going in the second half? The girl for the second half wants to go in the first half.” THE GIRL FOR THE SECOND HALF WANTS TO GO IN THE FIRST HALF. Why wasn’t he asking any of the eight men also booked on the show to switch? What would be so terrible about having two women in the first half? I get that you’re going for variety, but this girl and I could not have been more different in our acts. Now look, this gentleman I’m talking about is nice, and he’s now a friend of mine and probably has no IDEA that he said this to me all those years ago. I know he isn’t a sexist asshole. He was just doing what is considered normal in this business. And that’s kind of what’s so scary about it.”

Right now I am reading an awesome book called Women Who Run The Show about women in the entertainment industry, starting in the 1970s (obviously there were earlier female powerhouses, like Frances Marion and Anita Loose, but more women became involved during/after the feminist revolution). The book was written in the ’90s and it has its flaws—at one point it describes a female comedy writer as not looking like a comedian, whatever that means—but it has a lot of GREAT stories about women working on ’70s sitcoms and other comedy shows. Some of the stories are STRAIGHT-UP HORRIFYING …and when I hear stories like Sara’s above, I can’t help but be sad we’re still facing the same kind of comments FORTY YEARS LATER.

BEFORE and AFTER(ish): Office

Please excuse the difference between the professional “before” photos (from our Brides magazine shoot in 2009) and my shitty iPhone pictures. Once we are done-done, I will take some photographs with a nicer camera.

I spend A LOT of time in this office. It’s a tiny, tiny room but it’s where I do all of my writing. About a year ago, I got sick of all the kitsch (yes, it’s possible) and wanted to streamline the space. You can’t tell from the “before” pictures (because it was clean), but the office used to be our go-to place for any weirdness that didn’t have a home. Especially Maude Night props. Sketches of mine have included a mummy puppet, a parasitic triplet, a talking amputated leg and a severed hand, so, shit was often out of control in here. I have since cleaned out a shelf in a closet for props.

I also wanted a blank wall in front of where I write, like Teddy Roosevelt. (Because I am Presidential.)

This entire project was funded by selling the blue chair and the “desk” (a vintage table) in the “before.” In fact, I probably made a profit on this revamp because I’m good at flipping furniture. Here’s a list of everything “new” in the space:

Paint: Behr’s Disney line (I know) in 1000 Acre Rain. Really nice grey for this space. I didn’t want to go too dark because of the room size.
Cane Chair ($30 + paint): The Flea in The Street of Shops (my Dad’s store)
Fauxboo Desk ($30 + paint): Amherst Salvation Army
Rug ($25): Wholesale Liquidators in Queens
Dresser ($20 + paint): Church thrift store in Royersford, PA
Fauxboo Lamp ($1): Amherst Goodwill
Filing Cabinet ($0): Dad cast-off
Desk Chair ($0): free — found it on the street (don’t worry, I cleaned it)
Curtains ($0): we got a West Elm gift card with our new couch, so these were “free”

Things left to do:
- get a new cushion for the black cane chair because the two oranges be clashin’
- a lampshade that fits the green lamp
- paint the green lamp? (to be determined)
- light fixture to replace non-functional ceiling fan
- still looking for the right hardware for the dresser

Thanks, Chiara! Hopefully I’ll have new home improvement photos to post soon as Nick and I are planning on a living room overhaul this summer. Get ready, upstate New York and Central PA thrift stores! We’re coming for you! (Also, I wish I could post pictures of my office in its current state — the shaaaaade of it all.)

I wrote this sketch for Beige’s November show. It includes one of my favorite Jon Marballi performances, who nailed all things weird uncle, and a fun cameo by Beige writer Alene Latimer.

I’ve been thinking about Beige a lot lately and I’m always grateful I was part of such a great team. Good, funny people (and great friends).

I also LOVE my MTV co-workers and I’m sad about this job wrapping up soon. Comedy (and more specifically, UCB) has brought a lot of good people into my life. It makes me happy.

I remember when I first moved to New York, I had to introduce myself in an improv class and I said, “My name is Alison and I just moved here and I am looking for friends.” At the time, some jaws unhinged, but MY INSTINCT WAS CORRECT. Thanks, guys.

Ended up with the role of Gunther on “Friends” (1994) because he worked at a coffee shop as a barista and was asked if he would be interested in being an extra on the show working behind the counter.

He attended Clemson University and graduated with a degree in Geology. He earned his Masters in Fine Arts in Acting from the University of Georgia.

When he was 11, his parents died and he moved to Anderson, South Carolina, to live with his sister.

He attended T. L. Hanna High School in Anderson which is the same school in the movie “Radio” starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ed Harris.

Tyler’s signature peroxide blonde hair was actually accidental. The day before the Friends audition, one of Tyler’s acquaintances, who studied to become a hairdresser, experimented on his hair. When Tyler showed up for the audition, the producer liked it so much they decided to keep it.
